Acts 8:36-38, what's up with the NIV?

Acts 8:36-38
NIV:
As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?" And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

NKJV: Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" 37 Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water,
and he baptized him.

Why doesn't the NIV have verse 37? They even number it like they are missing something, it jumps from 36 to 38! This distresses me deeply. Why would the NIV cut out the most important part? Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus is God, that's the whole point of the Bible; we are to know God through His Son.

How are we supposed to understand who Jesus is if the truth gets edited out? If someone were only to be allowed to read this one passage, and they were handed a NIV they would walk away never knowing that Jesus is the Son of God!

I can't help but wonder what else has been edited out of God's Word.
